News in brief: Town centre shortlisted, assault investigated, schools appeal for votes

Helensburgh’s new-look town centre has been shortlisted for yet another national award.

The £7m project was one of 11 shortlisted for the RIAS Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland Award for 2016, won by the Saunders Centre in Glasgow.

Ellen Morton, Argyll and Bute Council’s policy lead for infrastructure, said: “The revitalised town centre designed by Austin-Smith:Lord, with its innovative Outdoor Museum in Colquhoun Square, was certainly worthy of inclusion.

“Many people, including local businesses and residents deserve the recognition for making this project happen and be such a success.”

Police Scotland are investigating an assault on two men in West Princes Street, Helensburgh.

A male suspect aged about 18 and of stocky build with fair hair is being sought after the incident at 10pm on October 28.

They are also investigating incidents of graffiti in the town, at East Argyle Street, Johnson Court and Malcolm Place.

Two primary schools in Helensburgh are urging members of the public to vote for them in a competition which will see the winning school receive £12,000.

Parklands and St Joseph’s primaries have been shortlisted as finalists in the Tesco Bags of Help initiative and will each receive a grant of either £8,000, £10,000 or £12,000 – all raised from the 5p bag charge.

The amount which each school will receive depends on how many votes they get from Tesco shoppers.

Members of the public can vote in local Tesco stores until this Sunday, November 13.
