News in brief: Classic cars beside Loch Lomond, defibrillators in Rhu, market and parade in Helensburgh

A spectacular field of nearly 90 cars will set off from Loch Lomondside tomorrow morning in Scotland’s premier classic car event.

The Scottish Malts Classic Reliability Trial and Classic Car Tour will start at Cameron House, returning there on Friday after a route that includes Killin, Mull, Oban, Grantown on Spey.

The 15th running of the event will see a field including Porsches, Jaguars and Austin-Healeys, with the oldest car being a 1928 Bentley crewed by Sue Shoosmith and Trina Harley.

Public defibrillators are being planned for Rhu and Shandon as part of the British Heart Foundation’s Heartstart initiative

The lifesaving equipment is expected to be installed at Rhu Marina and the Rosslea Hall Hotel, and the villages’ community council heard this month that areas such as Shandon and the upper parts of Rhu are also being considered – the community council will help to set up training days to support the project.

The next monthly market in Helensburgh will go ahead as planned, despite fears it would have to be cancelled because of a World War One commemoration event.

The market is Colquhoun Square and the Battle of Jutland remembrance event will both be held on Saturday May 14.

The parade and drumhead service are organised by the Helensburgh and District Branch of Legion Scotland in conjunction with Argyll and Bute Council and supported by the Royal Navy, Babcock and Helensburgh Community Council.; there will also be an exhibition in the Victoria Halls.

  1. Are the defibs going to be public access? If so there going to be in the wrong locations and will cost valuable time and will be little use because of this. Both locations are off the main road so it would be hard to get a vehicle in turned around and back out onto the main road.
