Public wifi in Helensburgh town centre due this month

Free public wifi should be available in Helensburgh town centre by the end of this month, it was revealed today.

The wireless broadband service was planned as part of Argyll and Bute Council’s £7m CHORD project for the town, and 12 months ago it was confirmed that a pilot project would go ahead.

Next week’s meeting of the council’s environment, development and infrastructure committee will hear that a contract has been agreed and installation work is under way.

The first phase is expected to be ready for Helensburgh’s Winter Festival on November 28 and 29, with a second phase coming online early in the new year.

Meanwhile, there is still no firm date for superfast broadband being available on the Rosneath Peninsula or in Rhu and Shandon.

First connections to the ‘next generation’ fibre optic service are still listed as being due between June and December this year for exchange areas including Kilcreggan, Clynder and Rhu.

The Rosneath, Garelochhead and Luss exchanges are due by June 2016, but BT is still ‘exploring solutions’ for the Coulport, Inveruglas and Arden exchanges.

Cardross and parts of Helensburgh are already listed as being live in the council report.

BT has asked customers to visit the Digital Scotland website and sign up for its newsletter to stay informed of updates.
