A huge section of the aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales made its way down the Clyde today, en route to Rosyth on Scotland’s east coast.

The 11,200 section left BAE Systems’ yard at Govan at 11am, passing Gourock and Kilcreggan more than six hours later, and is expected to reach its destination on Friday.

Floating on a barge, the section which will eventually form the warship’s hangar and accommodation area, was pulled by sea-going tug the Carlo Martello.

The Prince of Wales is due to be completed in 2017 and will be the second of the Royal Navy’s new Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carriers.

This is the largest section – the final two smaller sections will be delivered later this year.
