News in brief: Remembering the Great War, more cash for park fund,

Events to mark the First World War will be held in and around Helensburgh next year, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Jutland, which was fought from May 31 to June 1, 1916.

The Royal British Legion Scotland will take the lead in organising events including a parade and commemorative church service, Cllr Maurice Corry told Cove and Kilcreggan Community Council on Tuesday night.

He said events would centre on Helensburgh and Faslane but the whole area should become involved, adding: “I hope that by that time the submarine museum will be open and there will be events at that.”

A ‘wigs and wellies’ sponsored walk raised £1,400 for the campaign to refurbish Craigrownie Park in Cove.

And a £500 donation from Argyll Community Housing Association has also helped to bring the fund-raisers closer to their £100,000 target.
