Rhu Marina masterplan unveiled

A masterplan for the development of Rhu Marina has been drawn up – aiming to make it a ‘first class international and local destination’.

The proposals by the Crown Estate and Rhu Marina Developments Ltd would include a marina, bar/restaurant, convenience store, ‘sympathetic’ housing development and ‘compact boutique aparthotel’.

Although the site is in a prominent position in a conservation area, the masterplan says it is mainly brownfield, after being reclaimed in the 1970s.

“As a result of its current use over the years with little redevelopment, the site  clearly has a somewhat unkempt appearance and would benefit substantially from investment and redevelopment,” the report adds. It proposes:

  • A new marina facilities building
  • A bar/restaurant, ‘ideal for yacht owners, visiting yachtsmen, the local community and visitors/tourists’
  • A convenience store
  • A sailing club members’ clubhouse – subject to discussions with existing clubs
  • Offices, workshop and commercial units with associated retail
  • Up to 20 apartments
  • A hotel with 20 rooms/studios/apartments with a restaurant for guests

The shop is described as a ‘much-needed facility’ – although there are already two shops and a post office in Rhu. In December it was revealed here that Sainsbury’s had considered opening a store in the development, but had dropped the idea.

The marina facilities would be built first, followed by other aspects according to market demand.

An open day for the public to view the plans will be held in Rhu village hall from 3pm to 8pm on Tuesday April 2; the plans can also be viewed on the council’s website here – search for reference number 11/00789/PP.

  1. Given the summary dismissal of every development proposal(even the modest ones) the previous marina owners made I think this has nae chance.
