Artfest event planned for Cowal

Artists and makers from Cowal Open Studios will be showcasing their creativity at Dunoon’s Burgh Hall on Saturday May 4.

The ‘Cowal Artfest’ event will include artists from right across the peninsula from 10am to 4pm, as well as a concert featuring music and poetry from local writers together with wine and nibbles from 4pm to 6pm.

Paddy Allen explained: “During lockdown we couldn’t run our normal open studios weekend but we were able to set up hubs where we could display our works.

“This proved to be a huge success. Since then many people have asked why we haven’t repeated this and enjoyed the fact that they could see work by a large number of artists at the same time.

“Whilst our Cowal Open Studios weekend takes place later this year from September 20 to 23, we have decided it will be a good idea to have a central spot as a group to meet the public as well, hence Artfest in the wonderful surroundings of Dunoon’s Burgh Hall!”

Artists taking part include jewellery designer Nat Sedgwick, printmaker and graphic designer Katie Edge Mellor, Sandbank-based abstract painter Hans Calvert and ceramic artist James Coogan whose works are inspired by time spent in Svalbard and the Norwegian fjords.

Lorna Ahlquist, who suffered a life-changing horse-riding accident just over a year ago, will also be displaying her pottery as well as performing her poetry.

“It will be great to showcase my pottery and poetry at Artfest and I hope local people will turn out to see a range of fantastic artists and artworks at the Burgh Hall,” said Lorna, from Innellan.
