Ferries and lifeboat answered mayday call

Two CalMac ferries and a lifeboat answered a Mayday call from a boat off Kilcreggan this week.

A 36-foot yacht with two people on board had been dismasted with two persons on board on Tuesday at 2.20pm

The Kilcreggan ferry MV Chieftain and Dunoon ferry MV Ali Cat both responded to the mayday call, but the former was stood down while the Ali Cat’s crew secured the vessel until the RNLI arrived.

The lifeboat arrived just 15 minutes after the call, secured the yacht and towed it to Rhu Marina with the mast still over the side and with the headsail still rigged and immersed in the water.

Due to the weather conditions the mast could not be safely recovered and the decision was taken to secure the yacht on a marina mooring until the gear could be recovered.

An RNLI spokesperson said: “The two people on board were very grateful to the lifeboat crew and the ferry for coming to their assistance.

“The lifeboat was refuelled and ready for service at 5.50pm”
