Community library offers amnesty

Cove and Kilcreggan Community Library has made an appeal for missing items to be returned to its shelves.

The volunteer-run library recently formed a partnership with arts centre Cove Park and also stocks DVDs of films shown by Cove and Kilcreggan Film Society.

Volunteer Liz Mathie said: “We have around 150 books, CDs and jigsaws overdue, some from as far back as 2017.

“While we don’t have a charge for ‘forgotten items’ we would like our stock back, please. Happy hunting!”

Housed upstairs in Cove Burgh Hall, the library was previously run by Argyll and Bute Council until it was axed during cuts in 2010 – despite an earlier promise to keep it open when another group of volunteers took over the hall itself.

The library in Rosneath has never reopened after Covid-19 lockdowns, meaning the nearest taxpayer-funded library is 18 miles away in Helensburgh.

The Rosneath Peninsula Amenity Society stepped in to reopen the facility as a community library, which runs on donations, occasional small grants and fundraising coffee mornings, the next of which is Friday March 29 from 10am to 12 noon.

It is now run entirely by volunteers.

It is open four days a week – Mondays 2-5pm, Wednesdays 10am-4pm, and 10am-1pm on Fridays and Saturdays – and is always happy to sign up new members.

There is a wide range of fiction and non-fiction, as well as children’s books. A computer is available for public use, and the library also has a wide collection of CDs, DVDs, jigsaws and audio books.
