£1.5m coastal community funding sails past Helensburgh

Funding worth £1.5m for coastal communities looks set to be split between ten projects in Argyll and Bute – none of which are in Helensburgh and Lomond.

Helensburgh is the largest town in the council area and 30% of Argyll and Bute’s population live in the burgh and nearby villages.

But no projects in the area are earmarked for funding from the Scottish Crown Estate’s revenue.

Helensburgh and Lomond may be included in £515,000 spending on weather-related infrastructure and events.

But all the other money will be spent on projects in other parts of the council area.

A report to the council’s policy and resources committee says: “The expectation is that local authorities would use the funding for additional expenditure that specifically benefits coastal communities, with individual authorities making decisions on funding of projects to benefit coastal communities and being transparent and accountable to their communities and others for expenditure.”

It adds that elected councillors were emailed a list of suggested projects last August and final approval was subsequently delegated to executive director Kirsty Flanagan in consultation with council leader Robin Currie, depute leader Gary Mulvaney and opposition group leader Jim Lynch.

The final list which councillors will be asked to approve on Thursday is:

  • Demotion of Albert Pier – £40,000
  • Worker accommodation in Tobermory on Mull – £50,000
  • Nonhebel Industrial Park Mull £- 40,000
  • Tarbert heritage regeneration scheme development £60,000
  • Pontoons on Gigha – £11,000
  • A 360o immersive classroom Islay Gaelic Centre – £300,000
  • Installation of permanent mains electricity connection at Colonsay Airport – £120,000
  • Public realm enhancement at Morrison Square in Bowmore on Islay –£50,000
  • Shoreside facilities at Aros Park, Tobermory – £20,000

Staff lists of £101,000 are also listed, as well as the weather-related spending.
