Choir all set for A Sea Symphony

Helensburgh’s Oratorio Choir staged a rehearsal at the local lifeboat crew’s headquarters this week.

The choir’s 60th anniversary concert on Sunday February 18 is in support of the RNLI, which is celebrating its 200th anniversary this year, and the crew of the Helensburgh lifeboat were only too keen to get involved.

Choir members gathered round the Helensburgh lifeboat at its base in Rhu Marina where its crew turned out in full life saving gear on the lifeboat.

Choir chairman Alicia Tindal said: “We are thrilled to support the RNLI in its bicentenary year.

“As we will be performing A Sea Symphony by Vaughan Williams – it is a most appropriate association with the charity that rescues seafarers.”

The choir will be joined by the Rosenethe Singers from Dunblane, professional soloists and the orchestra of Scottish Opera.

Over 150 people will be on stage and as there is nowhere large enough in the area to accommodate this number, the venue is the Glasgow City Halls in Candleriggs.

Howard Morrison, local operations manager for the RNLI, said: “This year marks the RNLI’s 200th anniversary and we are delighted that the choir has chosen to support the RNLI and Helensburgh lifeboat station.

“We wish them well and hope that the concert is a great success. The RNLI is a charity which relies on donations to help save lives at sea.”

A Sea Symphony was written by Ralph Vaughan Williams between 1903 and 1909.

The concert will also include several folk songs arranged by Helensburgh musician Derek Clark, and a piece by young Scottish composer Aileen Clark about the environment around Loch Lomond.

Tickets are selling well at £20.16 for adults and £12 for students, including booking fee – accompanied children are free.
