A83 closure fear amid rain and flood warnings

The single-track Old Military Road could be used this weekend

Yellow warnings for rain and flooding have been issued for tomorrow and Monday.

Drivers have been warned that the main A83 may be closed at the Rest and Be Thankful, with the single-track Old Military Road being put on standby.

A spokesperson for contractors BEAR Scotland said: “Diversion of traffic will be subject to review of updated forecast and assessment of hillside conditions and saturation levels.

“A further update will therefore be provided if use of the Old Military Road is required.

“Our team continues to have a presence on site and are monitoring conditions closely.”

A Met Office yellow warning of rain will be in force from 6pm on Sunday until 9pm on Monday.

Deputy chief meteorologist David Hayter said: “There’s likely to be some persistent rain for northern Scotland – perhaps wintry at times for Shetland – on Sunday.

“The rain will slowly push north through Sunday, before pivoting and then return south later on Monday.

“Some southern parts of the warning area may see a drier interlude for a time on Monday and there is some uncertainly as to how far north the rain gets.

“40-75 mm of rain may fall quite widely in the warning areas, but there is potential for 120-170 mm in the wettest areas, this perhaps most likely in parts of Argyll, Lochaber and Wester Ross.”

SEPA has issued a yellow flood warning for areas including Argyll and Bute.
