New bid to demolish derelict Helensburgh building

A new attempt is being made to demolish a derelict building in the heart of Helensburgh town centre.

The former Chinese restaurant and flats at 9 East Clyde Street (above) have been empty for many years but now an application has been submitted to demolish it and build flats and a new commercial premises.

It is next to another derelict building, 5-7 East Clyde Street, which has frequently caused the road to be closed because of structural problems and falling debris.

A design statement produced by Puregreenspace architects on behalf owner Joe Lee says it is hoped that a new application for number 9 and enforced demolition of the adjacent building would mean both sites could be developed.

A four-storey building (above) is proposed, and the statement adds: “The general massing of the footprint copies almost exactly the existing footprint.

“However, in terms of its general design merits, the existing building does not add a great deal to the seafront and replacing it is an opportunity to tie into the proportions of the adjacent tenement, which in turn resonates with the Victorian proportions of numerous buildings on the Helensburgh esplanade.

“The proposed design will therefore tie in with the two main string courses of the adjacent building- thus keeping the scale of the basecourse and upper floors appropriate to the street.”
