Glen Fruin oil pipeline leak investigated

A multi-agency response is still under way after a leak of crude oil from the underground pipeline near Finnart Ocean Terminal on Loch Long.

Argyll and Bute Council, which is co-ordinating the operation, says ‘there is currently a very low risk to the wider public’ after a ‘small quantity of light crude oil’ surfaced from an underground pipeline.

Possible implications for a ‘small number of private water drinking supplies’ are being investigated by NHS Highland’s health protection team.

The leak led to the A817 Haul Road through Glen Fruin being closed for several hours last night and a cordon is still in place.

Police Scotland, SEPA, NHS Highland Public Health, Scottish Water and Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park Authority are all involved in the operation.

A joint statement said: “Petroineos, who own and operate the site have deployed specialists in spill containment and recovery to the area in Glen Fruin where they remain on site.

“The leak is located in a small area and all residents living in close proximity of the site are aware.”

Shona McConnell, SEPA’s senior manager – environmental performance, said: “SEPA officers are attending the site today to ensure Petroineos is taking all necessary measures and carry out visual inspections of the water environment. We understand that the pipeline has been depressurised and that containment and clean-up operations are in place.

“We will continue to work closely with partners, including Argyll and Bute Council, to monitor the response and clean up for as long as needed.

“The operator will be required to submit an incident report to SEPA in due course and officers will follow up any regulatory actions as appropriate.”

The terminal at Finnart receives large tankers of crude oil and is linked by pipelines to to the Grangemouth refinery.
