Affordable homes plan for Helensburgh and villages approved

Over 160 new affordable homes could be built in the Helensburgh and Lomond area over by March 2029 under a plan revealed last week.

Argyll and Bute Council’s new Strategic Housing Investment Plan (SHIP) was described as ‘ambitious but realistic’ when it was announced.

There would be 104 new affordable homes in Helensburgh, 35 in Cardross, ten in Kilcreggan and 12 in Succoth.

Council leader Robin Currie said: “Long-term investment in affordable housing is an essential ingredient in our overall aspiration to create prosperous local communities where quality homes are available to all.

“At the same time, we recognise the challenges that the housing sector is facing and the fact that the demand for social housing will potentially increase further in the years ahead.

“The plan outlines our commitment to work with all our strategic partners to ensure that we deliver homes which meet the needs of our communities and help to further enhance Argyll and Bute’s appeal as a great place to live and work.”

Two developments by Argyll Community Housing Association (ACHA) are listed – 14 units in Helensburgh’s East Clyde Street for the end of 2026 and ten in Kilcreggan the following year – ACHA is said to be ‘exploring options’ for sites in the village.

Five developments are listed for Dunbritton Housing Association:

  • 12 units at Jeanie Deans in Helensburgh, to be completed in 2025-26
  • 16 at the 18th Tee at Helensburgh Golf Club (2025-26_
  • 35 in Cardross  (2026-27)
  • 62 at Helensburgh Golf Club (2028-29)
  • and 12 in phase 2 of a development at Succoth, in 2028-29

The revised plans were agreed by councillors last Thursday.
