Classic paintings of the Clyde and Argyll at auction

Paintings of the Clyde, Inveraray and Glen Goil will feature in a major auction in Edinburgh next month.

Lyon & Turnbull’s ‘flagship’ Scottish Paintings & Sculpture auction will take place on Thursday December 7 live online and in Edinburgh.

The 170 lots feature works by some of the leading names in Scottish art, including Samuel John Peploe, Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell, Sir Henry Raeburn and Joan Eardley.

A Panoramic View: The Clyde, Dumbarton Rock In The Distance is by Thomas Dudgeon (1831-1878) and is signed and dated 1865.

Oil on canvas, it measures 97cm x 135cm and has an estimate of £2,000 to £3,000.

Sunset on the Clyde is by James Kay (1858-1942), who lived for most of his life at Portincaple and is well known for scenes of the river and shipping.

Oil on board and 23cm x 33cm it has an estimate of £800 to £1,200.

Although James Whitelaw Hamilton lived in Helensburgh for most of his life, the 36cm x 46cm oil painting which is catalogued as ‘Helensburgh’ does not appear to feature the town.

It has an estimate of £1,000 to £1,500.

On The Banks Of Loch Fyne, by George Houston (1869-1947) is oil on canvas, 71cm x 91cm, with an estimate of between £1,500 and £2,000.

Evening, Glen Goil, by George Blackie Sticks (1843-1938) has an estimate of between £1,000 and £1,500 – oil on canvas, it is signed and dated 1894 and is 46cm x 38cm.

And Crossing The Bridge At Inveraray by David Farquharson (1840-1907) also has an estimate of between £1,000 and £1,500.

Oil on board, it is signed and dated 1881 and 20cm x 30.5cm.
