Survey work starts for debris shelter option at Rest and Be Thankful

Survey work will start at the Rest and Be Thankful on Monday, meaning traffic lights and lane closures on the A83.

Transport Scotland says topographical surveys, including the use of a drone are preparing for design work for the long-term solution at the Rest and Be Thankful.

Earlier this year a preferred option of a £470m debris shelter (above) on the trunk road’s current route through Glen Croe was revealed.

It proved controversial – partly because traffic would have to use the single-track Old Military Road diversion route for long periods during construction – but transport minister Fiona Hyslop said last month that it would go ahead ‘at pace’.

The work is expected to last around three weeks, taking place on weekdays with no work at weekends.

A Transport Scotland spokesperson said: “These topographical surveys will provide key information for the design work as we progress the preferred option for the long-term solution at the Rest and Be Thankful.

“The surveys are aimed at capturing features such as roads, service covers, structures, vegetation and boundary lines along the preferred route corridor.

“We apologise for any inconvenience these works may cause and would thank road users and local people in advance for their patience during the works

“The contractor will closely monitor the operation of the traffic management measures to ensure that any delays are kept to a minimum.”

There will be rolling lane closures with two-way traffic lights, moving as the survey work progresses.
