Helensburgh Winter Festival promises to be better than ever

Helensburgh town centre is lit up for Christmas by volunteers

Helensburgh Winter Festival has switched to a new date this year – and is expected to be more festive than ever.

Rather than November as in previous years, the community event will be on Saturday and Sunday December 9 and 10.

First launched in 2012 and now a firm favourite, the festival will once again be based in Colquhoun Square.

The switch on for the town’s Christmas lights – billed as the best in the west of Scotland – is scheduled for Saturday November 18, so the yuletide atmosphere will start to build up very soon.

In the coming weeks there will be Christmas concerts, a lights display and decorations in Hermitage Park, a panto in the Victoria Halls, Santa’s Submarine at the Submarine Centre, Christmas movies in the Tower and a penguin painting competition for schoolchildren.

Then as the grand finalé of the month-long celebrations, the festival weekend will be officially opened by a very special guest and Helensburgh’s own Clan Colquhoun Pipe Band.

There will be over 100 market stalls offering gifts, food and drink options from local vendors, tombola and raffle prizes.

As well as live music and dance performances there will be traditional festive treats like a visit to Santa’s Grotto, a ride on the Miami Flyer, panto-themed street performers, funfair rides and the famous Round Table Santa Dash which takes place on the Saturday this year.
