Film society returns and celebrates a local hero

Cove and Kilcreggan Film Society is set to make a return this month for the first time since 2020.

And the first film – Local Hero – will not only welcome the society back with a feel-good classic, but it is also in tribute to a very real local hero.

Val Walker, of Kilcreggan, who lost her battle with cancer earlier this year, raised tens of thousands of pounds for Cancer Research by running ‘Cove Barras’ events.

She was the society’s most recent chair and is already much missed.

Local Hero was one of Val’s all-time favourite films and its title also echoes the huge fundraising and community roles she undertook.

Originally from Helensburgh and a well-kent face in Cove and Kilcreggan, Val was known for just rolling up her sleeves and getting on with it, and was always ready to help others.

This year is the 40th anniversary of Local Hero’s release – directed by Bill Forsyth and produced by David Puttnam, its cast includes Peter Riegert, Peter Capaldi, Denis Lawson, Fulton Mackay and Burt Lancaster in the story of Texas oil executives trying to buy a village on Scotland’s west coast.

Doors will open at Cove Burgh Hall on  Thursday November 9 at 7.15am, before lights down at 7.45pm. Entry is £5 on the door – or £30 for the whole season – and there’ll be free popcorn on offer.

Those attending are welcome to bring their own bottle other refreshments.

The group’s new Facebook page, which features a clapperboard profile picture, will feature all the society’s news and is the contact point for any questions.
