Facelift planned for former Helensburgh bookies’

A vacant Helensburgh shop in the town’s central conservation area could be set for a facelift under plans submitted to council chiefs.

The site of the former William Hill bookmakers at 9 West Clyde Street is the subject of an application for a replacement shopfront by Mr Karl Giarchi.

Although there is no indication of a potential new tenant at the premises, it is stated that signage will form the basis of separate advertisement consent application.

A planning design statement by ZM Architecture said the works would be part of the Helensburgh Shopfront Improvement Scheme under the Helensburgh Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme (CARS),which provides grants to help property owners and tenants repair historic buildings and shopfronts.

It adds: “The shopfront is a modern replacement which is generally in poor condition. The door is off centre to the east with one large, lying, rectangular display window.

“There is a modern roller shutter to the external face of the lobby. The pilaster and stall riser are formed in timber.

“The timbers to the pilaster are overclad over a stone cladding. The fascia is a polished stone cladding installed in panels. The stone cladding is considered not to be original.

“The client wishes to use high quality materials that will withstand the exposed marine environment with reduced maintenance.

“The intention is to give the proposals the syntax of an interwar shop with use of stone and metal window systems.”

The statement added: “The colours and materiality of the architectural elements are shown on the drawings. As there is no tenant currently in place the signage designs are currently unknown. This will form the basis of a separate advertisement consent.”
