Changes ahead for stations on West Highland Line

Garelochead’s station is one of those affected

Eight station platforms on the iconic West Highland Line are being lengthened to cater for cyclists and tourists.

Network Rail says that platforms need to be 15 metres longer because of plans by ScotRail for an additional coach on each service with extra space for bikes and ‘the leisure market’.

The work, which will include barriers, gates, handrails and steps, is planned for these stations:

  • Helensburgh Upper
  • Garelochhead
  • Arrochar and Tarbet
  • Ardlui
  • Crianlarich
  • Bridge of Orchy
  • Tulloch
  • and Roy Bridge

A letter to planners by Network rail states: “Three of the stations are listed buildings (Ardlui, Bridge of Orchy and Garelochhead) and require listed building consent, as the works to extend the platforms are reasonably considered to consist of alterations that would affect the stations’ character as buildings of special architectural or historic interest.

“The proposed platform extensions have been designed to integrate well with the existing platforms as to react positively with the station and landscape setting.”

Depending on the location, decisions on the plans will be taken by council and Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park planners.
