Pharmacy expansion given go-ahead

A Helensburgh pharmacy has been awarded planning permission to demolish buildings at its rear and extend its premises into the vacant space.

Gordons Chemists, at 52A Sinclair Street, made the bid to Argyll and Bute Council, with the areas proposed for demolition described as being ‘in a serious state of dilapidation’.

The plans will provide the shop with an extra 30 square metres of floor space, and no representations objections were received from the public, Network Rail – a statutory consultee due to the shop being close to Helensburgh Central station – or roads officials.

A council planning official said in a handling report that the ground floor unit was part of a larger block located in Helensburgh Town Centre Conservation Area.

The report added: “The proposed areas to be demolished to make way for the extension are in a serious state of dilapidation.

“This will be infill development, within the existing rear yard area. It will have a flat membrane roof with bin store areas to the rear.

“The new wall will be rendered. All of the works will be either internal back shop areas or not visible from any public area.”

“The main changes to the building are not on the principal elevations of the building and it is considered that these alterations would be insignificant in terms of the overall character and appearance of the building.

“It is also considered that the replacement of the dilapidated outbuildings with a fit for purpose minimal extension would not only maintain but also enhance the character and amenity of the surrounding conservation area and existing building.”
