50p to spend a penny in Helensburgh

Charges are set to be introduced at the public toilets in Helensburgh town centre.

Equipment is set to be installed which will charge 50p per visit, with cash and card options offered.

An Argyll and Bute Council spokesperson said: “We have had to deliver millions of pounds of savings over recent years and, with more cuts expected to come in future years, councillors made the decision to introduce charges at 16 high-footfall public toilets in a previous year’s budget-setting process.

“Councils do not have a duty to provide public toilets; the income generated from these charges will offset some of the costs of providing nearly 60 public toilets across our communities.”

Public toilets across the area were closed when Covid-19 restrictions were first imposed, with the council initially saying that those in Kilcreggan would not be reopened.

All public toilets have now been reopened however as the authority tries to encourage ‘staycation’ tourism.

There is no indication that charges will be imposed at the toilets in Kilcreggan or Rhu.

  1. No mention of any other area benefiting from these charges. No doubt they will be imposed in Oban, Dunoon, Campbelltown and Lochgilphead?

  2. Charging people to relieve themselves is a disgrace. As Helensburgh has a high level of visitors of a certain age via coach parties etc, clearly they are targeting them.

  3. Yes it is a disgrace and shortsighted. I will not return as a visitor and no doubt many others like me who visit often will be of the same mind.
It is the local shops and restaurants who will suffer.
