Boxing clever with new seafood venture

Fresh, hand-picked seafood has arrived in the area, thanks to a new venture by Arrochar woman Karen Fraser.

A familiar face in the village, having worked at Ben Arthur’s Bothy, Karen, together with her specially converted horsebox, has created The Seafood Box.

“My partner is a prawn fisherman,” said Karen.

“After Covid hit, the shellfish export market was poor as people were not going on holiday to eat what was caught.

“Craig started selling his prawns locally and we decided to take it a step further by converting an old horsebox to sell seafood platters.”

Karen’s catch is selected by Craig from small creel fishermen who he knows personally in Islay, Uist and Orkney.

The platters of lobster, langoustines and crab claws, together with smoked salmon pate and oatcakes, are crafted by Karen and delivered to customers on Fridays – orders should be placed by Wednesdays, so there’s no waste at all.

Karen is also interested in taking The Seafood Box to festivals and events, and would love to hear from organisers who could be interested.

“We don’t play about with the seafood,” said Karen. “The freshness speaks for itself – just add some crusty bread and wine.”
