Loch Long paintings in auction

Images of Loch Long and a painting by Helensburgh artist Mary Viola Paterson feature in a Glasgow auction this month.

Two works by Alma Wolfson – Heavy Weather, Loch Long (above) and Rain Hills, Loch Long (below) – feature in Great Western Auctions Ltd’s autumn two-day fine art and antiques auction.

Both are acrylic, 24cm by 24cm and with an estimate of £100 to £200.

Born in 1942, Alma Wolfson studied at Glasgow School of Art and has won awards including won many art awards including: Barclay Lennie Award, Glasgow Society of Women Artists 1995, Millers Art Prize Paisley Art Institute 1995, Southern Art Club Trophy 1995 ands 1998, Alva Purchase Prize SAAC 1998 and Save the Children Award 2000

The auction also includes The Black Lustre Jug by Mary Viola Paterson (1899-1981) – oil on canvas, 30.5 by 36cm and with an estimate of £150 to £300.

Paterson was born in Helensburgh and her father was the architect Alexander Nisbet Paterson who designed the town’s Clyde Street school (now council offices) and the Hermitage Park war memorial.

The artist James Paterson, one of the Glasgow Boys, was an uncle of as was William Paterson who ran a Bond Street art gallery.[

The British Museum holds three examples of her prints and the Victoria and Albert Museum has an example of her lobster print.
