Footpath upgrades for Helensburgh area

Plans for the latest batch of footpaths to be upgraded across Argyll and Bute have been revealed – with £750,000 being spent on the project.

All four administrative areas of the region will see some footpaths upgraded, with Helensburgh and Lomond having the biggest share of the funding with £252,750.

Bute and Cowal has been allocated slightly less, with £247,500, while Mid-Argyll, Kintyre and the Islands has been given £135,000 and Oban, Lorn and the Isles gets £114,750.

The council allocated the £750,000 pot as part of its 2023/24 budget when its spending plans for the year were set in February, and councillors are now being asked to agree the planned programme, which includes:

  • Dalmore Crescent in Helensburgh
  • A stretch of the A814 in Cardross
  • The A814 beside the Faslane naval base
  • Guy Mannering Road and Jeanie Deans Drive in Colgrain
  • Straid Bheag and Strad a Cnoc in Clynder
  • West King Street, between James Street and Sinclair Street in Helensburgh
  • And Grant Street, between East King Street and East Argyle Street in Helensburgh

Executive director Kirsty Flanagan said in a repot to the council’s environment, development and infrastructure committee that work was due to start this month.

“Consideration has been made in the work elements of each scheme to improving the quantity and quality of dropped kerb crossing points, as part of the overall surface improvement works,” she added.

“This programme will complement other footway works including limited revenue works, some active travel schemes and some minor footway resurfacing works which have resulted through street lighting cable replacement works as part of the street lighting programme.

“The works listed have been identified from the inspectors/team leaders based on their local knowledge – this is a combination of officers’ knowledge from their day to day activities and feedback from elected members and the public, including community councils.”
