Open day at Cove Burgh Hall

Cove Burgh Hall is opening its doors to the public for an informal event – 130 years after its first opening.

The B-listed building was the brainchild of Charles Cayzer, owner of the Clan shipping line who had a summer residence in Cove, and who, as Provost, initiated its building in 1891.

It was designed by Glasgow architect James Chalmers and opened in 1893, serving as the village hall for Cove and Kilcreggan under the ownership of successive councils for more than a century.

The B-listed hall survived a closure attempt by Dumbarton District Council in 1986 and another by Argyll and Bute Council 13 years later, before being taken over by the community in 2001.

Since then it has thrived and it now hosts a community library as well as groups ranging from Scottish country dancing to a choir, and table tennis to yoga.

From 12 noon to 3pm on Sunday September 3 there will be a chance to look round the hall, have a coffee, chat to volunteers and directors, see what’s on and hear about some of the groups.

Everyone will be welcome more information about the hall is available on its website.
