New cycle track route linking Helensburgh and Faslane revealed

A new consultation is under way on £10m designs for a cycle track between Helensburgh and Garelochhead.

Built two decades ago by Argyll and Bute Council, the current cycle track to the Faslane naval base is often not used by cyclists, with both pedestrians and cyclists saying they feel unsafe on it.

The council is planning a new link between Helensburgh and Garelochhead, which would cost £10m – with the price rising by nearly £3m if ‘placemaking nodes’ are included.

The first stage would go as far as the Faslane naval base, with proposals for the active travel route now available online.

The design team is holding a pop-up ‘conversations on the coast’ event on Tuesday June 27 in Helensburgh and will also be cycling along the route in the morning, as well as visiting Rhu Primary School and Hermitage Academy to discuss the new designs.

The council’s policy lead for roads and transport Andrew Kain said: “This latest consultation is another step closer to delivering a safe active travel route for local residents, visitors and people who work in the Helensburgh area.

“By linking routes, we can open up opportunities for active travel and encourage more people to travel by bike, foot or wheels.

“Huge thanks to everyone who has given feedback to the project so far. Please let us know what you think about the new proposed designs and if you can, join the team at the drop-in event to find out more.”

The council says it has included feedback from the community and created new proposals for the route.

The drop-in event will  be on West Clyde Street opposite Helensburgh Cycles, near the new Helensburgh Leisure Centre from 12 noon to 4pm next Tuesday.

The event includes a free bike-check service from Helensburgh Cycles to make sure your bike is safe and road-worthy.

The council is leading the project in collaboration with a design team that includes architects, engineers, planners and specialist consultants.

The project is supported by Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) and Transport Scotland’s Places for Everyone programme which is administered by Sustrans.
