Bid to cut drivers’ speed in Cove and Kilcreggan

The 30mph speed limit ends after the B833 leaves Cove.

New speed limits on the Rosneath Peninsula are to be requested.

Currently there is a 30mph limit in the villages of Cove and Kilcreggan, but the national speed limit of 60mph applies to other stretches main B833 road.

But this week the local community council decided to ask for a 40mph limit between Cove and Coulport, as well as between Kilcreggan and Rosneath.

Convener John Auld warned that it could be a long process though worthwhile, partly because of the number of deer which are causing accidents on the Mill Brae and Ferry Brae.

Members agreed to write to Argyll and Bute Council’s roads department asking for advice on how to make the change.

The community council has also contacted Police Scotland about stickers which would be attached to bins and lampposts on Shore Road and Argyll Road (below) to remind drivers of the 30mph limit.

Nick Davies said: “I think that’s a good thing, they do serve as a reminder.

“It’s not going to completely cure the problem, there will still be people who speed, but if it reduces the speed of some that is good.”

  1. There’s a 40 limit between Rosneath and Garelochhead. A sizeable chunk of drivers ignore it. There’s a 30 limit around the tip of the peninsula; Kilcreggan and Cove, again, a sizeable chunk of drivers ignore it. What’s needed is visual policing – of which there is none for a decade and more and drivers know it.
Forget the stickers. Those that speed will still speed.
