Yacht’s close encounter with a whale in Loch Long

A hump-backed whale which has been spotted around Loch Long surfaced alongside a yacht today.

Tim Wilson was sailing back to the Gareloch from Lochgoilhead today when he took this footage of the whale, which is roughly the size of a double-decker bus.

“The wind died in Loch Long a mile or so from entering the Clyde, and went to turn engine on and heard sound of watery explosion ahead!” he said

“Then seconds later this huge whale passed within a few feet and then dived and I took this video couple of minutes later as it surfaced heading into Loch Long.”

Later on Sunday evening the whale was spotted passing Hunter’s Quay, travelling towards Dunoon.

Last July a whale swam underneath a yacht on the same loch, which is home to the Royal Navy’s nuclear armaments depot at Coulport, as well as the NATO jetty at Glen Mallan, while in 2020 hundreds of whale-watchers went to the Gareloch to see three northern bottlenose whales fear the Faslane naval base.
