Classic Haydn oratorio to be staged in Helensburgh

Haydn’s great oratorio The Creation is being staged in Helensburgh next week.

Often thought secondly only to Handel’s Messiah in the pantheon of English-language oratorios, it is being performed by the Helensburgh Oratorio Choir.

A favourite since its first performance 225 years ago, it tells of the creation of the world as described in Genesis.

The choir will be accompanied by a classical orchestra with professional singers as the angels Uriel (Soprano Sian Winstanley), Gabriel (Tenor William Searle) and Raphael (Bass David Stout).

The conductor is Susannah Wapshott and leader Katie Hull.

Tickets for the performance in Helensburgh Parish Church at 7.30pm on Sunday April 23 are £15, or £7 for students and under-18s.

They are available from the choir’s website, church office, choir members or at the door.
