Steep increase in Hill House visitor numbers

Visitor numbers at the Hill House in Helensburgh shot up by more than 50% last year.

More than 30,000 people visited Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s masterpiece in 2022, new figures from the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions have revealed.

The total of 33,740 was an increase of 51% on 2021 and more than 2,000 above the pre-lockdown total in 2019 – a year when visitor numbers doubled after the opening of the award-winning ‘box’ which surround the house and protects it from the elements.

Elsewhere in the Helensburgh area, numbers on Ben Lomond rose 10% to 54,649 while there was a 3% fall in visitors to Geilston Gardens, to 12,970.

The Hill House was ranked 283rd for visitor numbers in the UK, with Ben Lomond 256th and Geilston 320th.

The most visited attractions last year were Windsor Great Park, with a 4% increase to 5,636,844, the Natural History Museum in South Kensington (4,654,608) and the British Museum (4,097,253).
