Post collections brought forward by six hours

Latest post collections across the Rosneath Peninsula are set to be brought forward by up to six hours.

Small stickers have appeared on post boxes all over the area, saying that the change is being made ‘to improve efficiency’.

The exact times vary, but in Kilcreggan a change from 3pm to 9am on weekdays, and from 10.15am to 7am on Saturdays, is typical, taking effect on March 1.

Changes to working practices at the Royal Mail led to a long-running industrial action by staff and now the company, which was privatised in 2013 , says many post boxes ‘no longer cover their costs’.

A spokesperson added: “A significant decline in letter volumes means that many post boxes contain very few items of mail, meaning collecting from these boxes is not efficient.

“Rather than decommission uneconomic low-use post boxes, since 2014 we have been improving the efficiency of our collections.

“This means the mail collection from these post boxes will be carried out by the local postman or woman on their delivery route, at a time dependent on where the box is located on that route.”

He added that there would always be a later post box (after 4pm) within a mile of a ‘collection on delivery’ box, but the location of these is not yet clear.

In recent years post offices have been closed down in Clynder and Cove, as well as on Helensburgh’s Churchill estate.
