MP demands investigation into Royal Navy sexual harassment claims

A Vanguard-class submarine on the Gareloch – harassment claims have been made by women serving on Royal Navy submarines

MP Brendan O’Hara has called for a fully independent investigation into claims of sexual harassment by Royal Navy personnel.

He says female whistleblowers have revealed the abuse, harassment and violence that they have suffered at the hands of male colleagues across the service over the course of many years.

Mr O’Hara’s Argyll and Bute constituency includes Faslane and Coulport – many of the recent harassment claims have been made about people in the Submarine Service.

He said: “The reports that have emerged over the weekend are truly shocking and I pay tribute to the women who have spoken out over the abuse they have suffered.

“It is completely unacceptable that misogyny and harassment of women are apparently endemic within the Royal Navy, and unless a complete overhaul happens within the service.

“I am concerned it undermines the hard work of the thousands of honest and hard-working personnel that will be equally shocked by this horrific news.

“I am rather sceptical about the First Sea Lord’s announcement of yet another internal investigation and would call for a thorough, independent investigation – one that can report without fear or favour.

“I have called on the Minister for the Armed Forces to announce an investigation of the abhorrent experiences that so many women have had to endure whilst serving in the Royal Navy.”,

Andrew Murrison, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Ministry of Defence, said in response to a parliamentary question on Monday that he was concerned by the allegations.

He added: “Any activity which falls short at the highest standards in the Royal Navy is totally unacceptable and not a true reflection of what life should be.

“Sexual assault and harassment has no place in the Royal Navy and it will not be tolerated.

“The First Sealord has directed a formal investigation into these allegations, and this commenced on October 24.

“This independent investigating team, being led by a senior female officer, will thoroughly examine the allegations and report that very soon. It is understood that the named individual has agreed to meet the investigating team to provide her account.

“While this investigation will review specific allegations, Defence will also review the culture and report to ministers in due course, the House will understand that it would be premature to offer any further comment or debate until those investigations are complete.

:However, anyone who is found culpable will be held accountable for their actions. Regardless of their rank and their status.”
