Independent wins Argyll and Bute by-election

Alastair Redman

Independent Alastair Redman has won a by-election in Argyll and Bute caused by the death of a long-serving councillor.

Previously a Conservative councillor and parliamentary candidate, the Islay resident beat the SNP’s Lachie MacQuarie into second place.

The by-election in the Kintyre and the Islands ward was called following the death of John McAlpine, was first elected in 2003 and continued to be an elected member until 2017, before being re-elected in May this year.

Argyll and Bute Council is run by the ‘TALIG’ coalition of Conservatives, Liberal Democrats and some independents, with a very narrow majority following May’s elections.

The SNP has 12 seats, the Conservatives 10 and the Liberal Democrats five.

Labour and the Greens have one councillor each, and he remaining seven are independent.
