In pictures: Dolphins off Kilcreggan

Dolphins were caught playing in the Clyde off Kilcreggan by photographer Mike McLean.

The cetaceans have been spotted near Gourock several times this year, as well as being photographed off the bows the Waverley paddle steamer and even a submarine.

Mike, who lives in Kilcreggan, spotted them near his home this week.

Danny Groves of the Whale and Dolphin Conservation charity, said they appeared to bottlenose dolphins, which were not uncommon visitors.

“They could be following prey or just having fun,” he added.

“One thing that is on the increase though is human disturbance of whales and dolphins.

“Our advice for members of the public would always be to keep your distance.

“It is illegal to disturb whales and dolphins and as more people are using the sea as a source of enjoyment (on boats, paddleboards and in kayaks for example), the risk of disturbance is growing.

“Many species are seen close to shore and disturbance happens when people get too near to marine wildlife, disrupt their natural behaviours and cause them stress.

“A good encounter is one that is enjoyable for you and the whales or dolphins.”
