Sounds of Finland and Scotland coming to Cove

A unique combination of Scottish and Finnish music is coming to Cove later this month.

Harpist and composer Pippa Reid-Foster will be performing with Finnish kantele player Eva Alkula – the duo have just completed a successful tour of Finland.

And they will also be holding a workshop teaching Finnish folk music in Helensburgh.

Pippa, who lives in Helensburgh and grew up in Cove and Kilcreggan, started collaborating with kantele player Eva when she was performing at Edinburgh International Harp Festival and was approached by an organiser for the Isle of Wight Festival.

Much of the music is new and includes Pippa’s own works specifically composed for clarsach and kantele.

Titled Meta Morphosis, the concert in Cove Burgh Hall will feature minimalist works focussing on the impact of climate change and the current pandemic on our lives and our world.

Doors open at 7pm on Saturday July 30, and the concert starts at 7.30; tickets cost £12 and are available from the hall’s website.

Then the following day (Sunday July 31) the duo will hold a multi-instrumental workshop, open to all ages and abilities, in The Bridge in Helensburgh (the rooms attached to the West Kirk).

The event will from 2-4pm with a short break – Pippa and Eva and I will perform as well.

Tickets are £12, or £8 for anyone who is going to one of the concerts.

Pippa and Eva are also holding concerts in Glasgow’s Glad Café on July 22 and Kinlochard Village Hall on July 24.

A graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Pippa has released one album – Driftwood Harp – and is working on an album with Eva which is expected to be released this autumn, before a second solo album by Pippa next year.
