Anti-nuclear protesters travel to Faslane and Coulport

Anti-nuclear campaigners will arrive at Faslane and Coulport this weekend after travelling hundreds of miles with a giant peace symbol.

Starting in the south-west of England, Trident Ploughshares and Extinction Rebellion are towing the logo 400 miles to Faslane Peace Camp.

This weekend (June 11-12) it will be part of the peace camp’s 40th anniversary celebrations, then the protesters say it will ‘tour’ the Coulport armaments depot where Trident nuclear weapons are stored.

Then on Thursday June 16 letters will be handed in during protests at Faslane (11am) and Coulport (3pm).

They will be camping at Peaton Glen Wood, close to Coulport – campaigners last stayed at the campsite five years ago, when they estimated their numbers at 80.

There were arrests when protesters blocked the entrance to the Coulport depot (above), and they also threatened to cut perimeter fences to get inside the Faslane and Coulport bases.

Veteran peace campaigner Angie Zelter, who is travelling with the protesters from her home in Wales, said: “The Ukraine war has made it more obvious than ever that nuclear weapons do not prevent war. They just make it more dangerous.

“The bottom line with so-called ‘deterrence’ is the willingness to commit mass murder, an atrocity on a vast scale, a major war crime.

“It is not some common-sense insurance policy. Instead, it leads to the whole global civilian population being held hostage.”

The campaign is scheduled to end on June 18.
