Ardencaple Hotel’s new-look outdoor area approved

A Helensburgh hotel has succeeded in its bid to redesign its outdoor seating area with new furniture, free-standing screens and decorative lighting.

The plans for the Ardencaple Hotel, on the A814 have won planning permission and listed building consent from Argyll and Bute Council.

No objections were received by the authority’s planning officers.

The proposal for the hotel, submitted by Tim Wass, also includes five-metre jumberellas, planting and festoon posts, and will cover the front and side of the hotel.

A council planning official said in a handling report that the hotel was a category A listed building.

It was built in the early 19th century by the Dukes of Argyll as a posting inn on the road between Glasgow and Inveraray.

“The proposed alterations are all external and within the curtilage of the listed building. none of the proposals are fixed in any way to the listed building,” the report adds.

“The proposals focus around the reconfiguration and upgrade of the existing ‘beer garden’ to the front and sides of the property by way of; altering the current layout, replacement of existing seating, installing additional seating, installation of two 5x5m jumberellas (colour red).

“The proposed alterations on the whole represent an upgrade to the existing beer garden which in turn enhance the overall property. The proposals use high quality design and materials.”

The application for listed building consent was made by Greene King, with a report adding: “All developments that affect listed buildings or their settings must; be of the highest quality, and respect the original structure in terms of setting, scale, design and materials. In accordance with the above it is considered that the proposed alterations are acceptable.

“Historic Environment Scotland were consulted and have noted that they do not have any comments to make on the proposals.”
