SNP aims to control Argyll and Bute Council

The SNP says it is bidding to take control of Argyll and Bute Council after what they say was a ‘significant’ win the May 5 elections.

It is the largest party with 12 councillors, as well as the largest share of the vote, with a councillor in each of the council’s 11 wards, and two in Oban South and The Isles.

Cllr Jim Lynch

There are 36 councillors in total though, so the party is still well short of an overall majority.

Yesterday Jim Lynch was unanimously elected as group leader.

“I would like to thank the majority of the electorate of Argyll and Bute for placing their faith in the SNP,” he said.

“Voters in every ward in Argyll and Bute have delivered a message.

“That message is they want to see a change in their local council and that they want the SNP to lead that change. I would like to make clear to those voters that delivering that change is exactly what I intend to do and I will now begin the work required to ensure the SNP lead Argyll and Bute Council.

“Now we have the chance to put together a fresh start for the area, with more decision-making involving communities and better services which are responsive to local demand.”

A total of 19 councillors is needed to control the council – for details of how other parties could try to retain control, see an analysis here.
