No move to Helensburgh waterfront for the Co-op

The Co-op has ruled out a move across Helensburgh town centre.

There were reports on social media this week that the supermarket chain was planning to close its store on Sinclair Street and move to one of the new units planned for in front of the waterfront leisure centre.

But today a Co-op spokesperson said: “Co-op always looks for possible new locations where stores can operate at the heart of local life, however, there are no plans in place to close or relocate our Sinclair Street store.”

There is still no indication of what type of businesses could occupy the retail units, which Argyll and Bute Council sees as key to its financial planning for the £22.3m development.

Initially Next and Tesco were mentioned in a council report about the project, but these were later said to be just examples of the type of store that could be there.
