Naval base ‘loaned’ GP after medical centre hit by Covid

A doctor from the naval base at Faslane was deployed to help at Kilcreggan Medical Centre when it was hit by Covid-19 last week.

With staff affected by the virus, the surgery announced that face-to-face appointments could not be held with a GP until the naval base stepped in.

A social media post from the surgery said: “We are incredibly grateful to them for ‘loaning’ us one of their doctors to help out.

“It was a much-appreciated gesture and helped us keep the surgery running, so once again, thank you.

“Thanks must go to all our patients for your understanding, patience and good wishes to our staff who were struck down with Covid last week.

“Situations like this certainly bring it home that we are fortunate to have such a great team here at the surgery.”

Dr Donal Murray is still in isolation this week but will be consulting patients from home via telephone or video link.

If a patient needs to be seen by a GP urgently, Dr Murray will make arrangements with the Millig and McLachlan practices in Helensburgh who have offered their help.

The surgery is actively seeking GP locum cover and has secured advanced nurse practitioner cover all week.

Surgeon Commander Mike Russell, the principal medical officer at HMS Neptune, said: “The medical team at HMS Neptune has close links with the local NHS and our GPs will perform occasional unpaid sessions for professional development.

“We were very happy to be able to assist Kilcreggan Medical Centre during a time when they were under particular pressure.”
