Woolly submarine lands in Helensburgh for remembrance day

Marking 100 years of the Remembrance Poppy, a mysterious woollen creation has appeared on a Helensburgh post box.

The town has a particularly close connection with the Royal Navy’s submarine service as it is very close to the base at Faslane.

And this has been marked in secret by a creative crocheter.

The identity of the maker is unknown, but the use of a submarine within a wreath of poppies does perhaps indicate a local hand.

And the detail of the boat itself, complete with planes, suggests some knowledge of the UK’s submarine fleet.

The rendering can be found on the pillar box of West Princes Street, neat to Helensburgh Central station, and has been catching the eyes of pedestrians and motorists alike.

Each of the poppies has a button with an anchor at its centre.

This year is the centenary of the poppy being adopted as a powerful emblem of the bloodied fields of World War One.
