Kilcreggan pier is given a refurb

Kilcreggan’s historic pier is being refurbished.

The B-listed pier, which celebrates its 125th birthday next year, is one of the last traditional wooden piers still in use on the Clyde.

It is owned by Argyll and Bute Council, and a spokesman said today: “The former pier office on Kilcreggan Pier is being refurbished.

“This includes replacing the felt roof and like-for-like replacement of timbers and windows.

“This is an investment in the region of £15,000.”

Kilcreggan’s first pier was built in 1850, but the distinctive present structure dates from a rebuilding in 1897.

It is regularly used by the Waverley paddle steamer, as well as the regular CalMac ferry link with Gourock, currently operated with the MV Seabus.

Last month there was a call for the pier to be upgraded to A-listed status, because of fears that it might become redundant and case to be maintained if the council’s £1.1m plans for ‘Kilcreggan Harbour’ mean the ferry uses pontoons or a linkspan instead.
