Survey on new path between Helensburgh and Garelochhead closes soon

Time is running out for the public to have their say on a new walking and cycling route between Helensburgh and Garelochhead.

Consultation on the ‘multi-year project’ started last month and so far almost 100 people have responded, with more than 30 people expressing interest in joining an engagement group.

A cycle path running from Helensburgh as far as Faslane was built 20 years ago but has proved controversial – many cyclists don’t use it and stay on the main A814 instead.

But now a new track for both cyclists and walkers is being planned – going further than the naval base, and with new routes being considered.

Argyll and Bute Council has employed icecream architecture to help with consultation on the route, and the company’s Ruth McQueeney said the survey was closing on June 18.

“We’ve got a good response on the survey so far but we are keen to get more so we get a really good picture of how local folk travel at the moment, and how they’d like to travel in the future,” she said.

“This is important to have alongside our technical analysis of what improvements can be done at different points along the route, such as where there are narrow sections, like past Rhu Primary.”

It is still possible to join the engagement group via this form and a second round of consultation, focussing on the proposed route, is planned for later this summer.

‘Sustainable transport links’ have been discussed behind closed doors by Argyll and Bute Council and Ministry of Defence officials since 2018, but the council’s attempt to build a cycle path between Helensburgh and Cardross has been dogged by delay – it is now hoped that it will be complete in 2027.
