Clyde Bar’s outdoor seating plan approved

A Helensburgh pub has been given the go-ahead to install an outdoor seating area at its seafront premises.

The Clyde Bar had recently failed with an application to the Argyll and Bute Licensing Board, and subsequent appeal to the Scottish Government to extend the opening hours of the beer garden to the rear of the property.

But Argyll and Bute Council has now approved proposals for a change of use of pavement outside the front of the West Clyde Street premises to install an outside seating area.

Two objections had been raised by members of the public, who live in neighbouring properties, concerning noise and obstruction of the pavement.

However, a council planning official said that neither environmental health nor roads staff from the authority had any concerns.

The planner said: “The public house is located within the seafront of Helensburgh, during the CHORD upgrade the town centre pavements were widened. Therefore, the proposal is to utilise this and have a seating area to the front of the premises.

“This seating area will measure 12 metres long, by 1.5 metres wide at the widest and it will accommodate approximately five tables with chairs. This is also set back from the main carriageway at approximately 2.8m.

“The tables and chairs are removable and are to be removed at night and replaced in the next day.

“The Clyde Bar is located in Helensburgh town centre sea front, where a range of commercial uses already exist and front on to the busy thoroughfares. These include a range of shops, cafes, restaurants and public houses opening into the evening.

“The introduction of a small outdoor seating area in front of an existing pub would be consistent with a commercial town centre and also the council’s policy on the use of pavements.”

They added that the area could only be used from 9am to 9pm, seven days a week.

Various conditions are also applied, such as the pavement café not acting as a distraction to drivers or causing a hazard to public safety.
