Rail improvements at Craigendoran welcomed

Work completed ahead of schedule at Craigendoran should make Helensburgh trains more reliable, Network Rail said today.

The news has been welcomed by MSP Jackie Baillie, who said problems with ‘axle counters’ had first been raised with her by constituents three years ago.

That stretch of the line to Helensburgh Central is frequently affected by flooding and high winds – currently it is closed due to flooding, with ScotRail services being stopped at Dumbarton.

Ms Baillie said she was ‘delighted’ that the work to replace failing axle counters had been completed early.

““The problem was first raised with me back in 2018 by local constituents who were frustrated and rightly, sick of late running and cancelled trains caused by the outdated equipment,” said the Dumbarton constituency MSP.

“I know local passengers will be delighted to hear that the axle counters will now no longer be causing any delays to their journeys.”

A Network Rail spokesperson said the axle counters, which monitor trains’ movements, had previously caused problems in very poor weather when floodwater coming over the seawall had caused them to fail, but the changes had made them more robust.

“We’re working hard to make Scotland’s Railway more reliable for our customers and this enhancement will help to reduce weather-related delays on the line through Craigendoran,” he added.
