New appeal for red squirrel sightings on Rosneath Peninsula

Have you seen red squirrels on the Rosneath Peninsula?

A new appeal has been issued for the public to report sightings, after a survey last year revealed that reds had been spotted in Cove and Ardpeaton.

Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels, a partnership project led by the Scottish Wildlife Trust, has issued the appeal.

A spokesperson said: “Can you help us gain a clearer picture of what’s happening on the ground in our Argyll, the Trossachs and Stirlingshire project area?

“We need to find out more about both red and grey squirrel distribution in the Rosneath Peninsula, Balfron & Killearn and Fintry .

“If you live in the local area and spot a squirrel while out walking, you can or get in touch to find out the other ways you can get involved where you live.”

Last year the second Great Scottish Squirrel Survey also showed new sightings above Cardross, as well as at Clynder and Garelochhead, where the creatures were seen two years ago.

For the last 12 years the group has implemented control measures along the Highland Line from the Gareloch to Montrose to contain the incursion of the non-native grey squirrel into red squirrel strongholds to the north.
