New memorial for RAF Helensburgh planned

The panel would be similar to one on Helensburgh seafront

A new memorial to a wartime RAF base is being planned for Helensburgh.

A plinth in the town’s Kidston Park has been proposed by Helensburgh Heritage Trust.

A planning application to Argyll and Bute Council says the new panel would be in the same style as those elsewhere on the Clyde Sea Lochs Trail.

“A commemorative stone pillar for RAF Helensburgh already exists in Helensburgh’s Kidston Park, however it provides almost no information on the important work which RAF Helensburgh undertook during the Second World War,” states the application.

“Helensburgh Heritage Trust believes that this explanatory display panel will rectify this situation.”

Over 300 people worked at RAF Helensburgh, a base for flying boats during the war – it was the home of the secret Marine Aircraft Experimental Establishment (MAEE).

A memorial to MAEE was placed in the park by the Trust and the Airfields of Britain Conservation Trust in 2017.

The Clyde Sea Lochs Trail runs from Dumbarton to Arrochar, with display panels in locations including Ardmore Point, Helensburgh seafront, Cove and Kilcreggan.

The planning application is on the council’s website – the reference number is 20/02120/PP.
