New Covid testing brought in at Helensburgh care home

Lateral flow testing for visitors and staff is being introduced at a Helensburgh care home this week.

Argyll and Bute Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP) is an early adopter area for the Scottish Government project to introduce the tests.

Lateral flow tests can be used to check if an individual is infectious for Covid-19, even if they are not displaying symptoms.

The sample does not need to go to a laboratory to be analysed and a test result is usually available within 30 minutes.

An HSCP spokesperson said: “The test, which will not be mandatory, will be carried out by trained care staff when visitors arrive at the care home and will greatly help with the safety of residents and staff within the facility.

“Anyone who tests positive will not be admitted for a visit and will be advised to self isolate and book a Covid test.

“The introduction of lateral flow testing is really good news for residents.

“At the same time it is important that visitors follow the relevant Scottish Government guidance for visiting and that they still wear the appropriate PPE. ”

The tests will start in Northwood House in Helensburgh this week, together Ardfenaig Residential Home in Ardrishaig) and Thomson Court on Bute.

It is also planned that from December 14 all care homes within Argyll and Bute will be providing lateral flow tests for visitors.
